    • What is Openness? What makes knowledge and education open?

      Objectives

      Librarians can advocate to the wider education community for higher levels of ‘openness’, particularly in terms of access, content, pedagogy, recognition, technology, research and quality. They are familiar with how openness can manifest in the areas of policy and leadership.

      Outcomes

      Librarians can:

      • explain the meaning of ‘openness’ within open knowledge systems
      • explore the ten components of the OpenEdu framework
      • analyse their (collaborative) role in relation to seven areas of the OpenEdu framework
      • articulate their role in creating awareness among their academics of open education concepts

      1. Consider what you have read and thought about Openness and your role as an ‘open librarian’. 
      2. Download the Institutional Evaluation Template (in Word template). 
      3. Complete the table in the institutional evaluation template to:
        • Rate your institution’s Openness.: For each dimension of Openness give a rating out of five (five being the best) for your institution, and give a reason for your rating. If possible, talk to a few fellow librarians and/or academic staff to discuss your rating.
        • Devise a plan: For each dimension write down the names or positions of people you can talk to about your rating, and collaborate with. Write down one action you can do to improve your institution’s Openness. Set a date by when you will act. There may be an overlap between dimensions.
